Selected (WWW) Pointers

Two caveats regarding these pointers: This page is inherently non-monotonic. I explicitly do not try to include as many entries as possible. This is a subjective selection of links that have been useful in the past or might be in future.

Searching

Everyone knows Google, of course, but there is more.

  • AltaVista
[Seems weak with regard to checking pages in its database for updates/removal.]
  • HotBot
[The ranking of search results is very poor.]
  • WebCrawler
[Doesn't seem to check pages regularily, but supports redirection.]
  • Yahoo (search engine and index

Self references: AltaVista, Google, HotBot, WebCrawler Yahoo.

Computers

Vendors (and Products)

The following are some partners and products employed in business computing, prepress, and university environments I was responsible for in the 1990s and early 2000s; I've omitted evident entries such as AMD, Intel, HP, or IBM. (Tom's Hardware Guide is also worth a look.)

Security

Let's get rid of hoaxes now!

(Free) Software

Many of us these days use quite a lot of software from the GNU project such as a2ps, binutils, bison (a general-purpose parser generator), Emacs, flex, GCC, glibc and more.
